Field Archive Media A group of eight Japanese companies — including Canon, Hitachi, Pioneer, Sanyo, and Sharp — proposed the iVDR format in 2002. The format is basically a ruggedized, removable hard-disk drive with copy protection, and one of its original uses was to transfer and playback consumer media.
